The Institute of Egyptology and Coptology in the Faculty of Philology at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a


Research Associate (Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in. salary level E 13 TV-L)

for the externally funded project Bāḥra ḥassāb: Knowledge Transmission in Ethiopia and Eritrea From Antiquity to Modern Times commencing on 1 January 2026. We are offering a fixed-term part-time position (65%) for 2 years until 31 December 2027, with the possibility of a two-year extension, subject to a positive interim evaluation of the whole project.

Your tasks:

  • collaboration in the externally funded project Bāḥra ḥassāb: Knowledge Transmission in Ethiopia and Eritrea From Antiquity to Modern Times;
  • detailed codicological analysis of the surviving witnesses of ʾAbušākǝr (including their description in TEI XML);
  • partial edition and translation of the text;
  • study of the circulation and reception in the Ethiopian tradition of the calendric and astronomical concepts transmitted in the text;
  • publication of research results in one of the leading journals in the field
  • assistance with organization of project related events;
  • active participation in regular project meetings;
  • presentation of research results at conferences and workshops

Our expectations:

  • A graduate degree (master’s degree) in Ethiopian Studies, Semitic Studies, or a related field is required.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Ethiopic language (Geʿez) is required.
  • Good command of English or German is required.
  • Good command of Arabic, Coptic and Greek are advantageous.
  • Experience in reading and analysis of scientific texts, both historic and modern, is desirable.
  • Amharic language skills would be advantageous but are not a requirement.
  • Substantiated knowledge of Digital humanities methods and/or textual criticism methods would be welcomed.
  • Willingness to work in international research team
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • High motivation and initiative.
