The Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity in the Faculty of Biology at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a

Postdoctoral Research Associate (Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in, salary level E 13 TV-L, 100%)

for a core project of the Germany-wide GEvol consortium on comparative evolutionary genomics (DFG SPP 2349) commencing on 1 April 2026. We are offering a fixed-term full-time position (100%) corresponding to the project’s duration for three years. The project will be supervised in close collaboration between the groups of PD Katharina Hoff in Greifswald and Prof Erich Bornberg-Bauer in Münster with primary location to be determined.

Your tasks:

  • Develop cutting edge methods for accurate functional annotation of novel and de novo expressed genes and other rare genomic elements using machine learning techniques.
  • Combine bioinformatics methods and further recently developed methods such as Tiberius, Galba and BRAKER3.
  • Testing and application of the newly to be developed methods shall be done in close collaboration with other members of the GEvol consortium.

Our expectations:

  • A PhD and a master’s degree in natural science, computer science or closely related areas.
  • Strong skills in biocomputing, bioinformatics and experience with Python, Linux, Bash, machine learning methods.
  • A proven record of having worked on analysing large biological data sets.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including oral and written fluency in English.
  • Experience in Writing and publishing papers in international journals.
  • International experiences
  • German language skills are not a requirement, but a willingness to learn would be advantageous.
