The research group for Molecular Evolution and Bioinformatics, led by Prof Bornberg-Bauer, in the Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity, at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a

Postdoctoral Research Associate (Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in, salary level E 13 TV-L, 100%)

The starting date, while flexible, should be April 2025. We are offering a fixed-term full-time position for 3 years with the option of an extension. Full-time employees are required to teach 4 hours per week during the semester.

Your tasks:

This position is tied to working towards qualifying for an independent group leader position such as Emmy Nöther, Heisenberg Fellowships or ERC Starting Grants by designing own projects (mentorship can be provided) and supervising project students.

The successful candidate shall undertake work in the area of computational comparative molecular evolution at the level of macro- or population genomics in the area of novel gene emergence and the role of TE proliferation.

This includes, for example:

  • the analysis and construction of biological data sets to reconstruct past evolutionary events of genes, genomes and proteins
  • the application of computational methods for analysing large genetic and genomic data sets
  • collaborating with and helping to coordinate larger research consortia related to genome evolution
  • supervising students and helping teach related courses at BSc, MSc and PhD levels, including computational methods related to molecular and genome evolution

The successful candidate will be encouraged and expected to build up their own research agenda related to the subjects of the group by applying for external funding.

Our expectations:

  • A PhD in the biological sciences, and proven research experience in computational genomics and molecular evolution.
  • Experience in handling biological data and comprehensive proficiency in analysing genomes and adaptive and neutral evolution.
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of project students.
  • Good knowledge of Linux, Python, R, genome assembly and phylogenetics as well as NGS methods and data analysis.
  • International research experience and proven publication and presentation records in English area must.
