The research group of Prof Tobias Heindel from the Department for Quantum Technology in the Faculty of Physics at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a

Research Associate (Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in, salary level E 13 TV-L, 100%)

for the externally funded project "Vernetzt" (funded by BMFTR—Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space) commencing on 1 January 2027. We are offering a fixed-term full-time position during the project runtime until 30 June 2030. The appointment is subject to the final approval of funding by the BMFTR.

Your tasks:

  • Contribute to the scientific objectives and milestones of the “Vernetzt” project
  • Set-up and Coordination of quantum optics experiments using semiconductor quantum dots for entangled photon generation
  • Working with microscopes, lasers, electrical instruments, cryogenic environments, programming experimental control systems and software
  • Development of field-deployable demonstrators for quantum communication in optical fibers
  • Conceptualization and execution of quantum communication experiments in laboratory and field trials
  • Writing of project reports and organization/participation of/in project meetings
  • Publication of research results in leading international journals and presentation of results at scientific conferences
  • Supervision of Bachelor's and Master's students
  • Close synergetic interaction with team members at the University of Münster, external project partners, and collaborating groups.

Our expectations:

  • A graduate degree (i.e. German Diplom and/or master’s degree) in physics, or a closely related field, are required
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience in the field of material science, semiconductor physics, photonics, quantum optics and quantum information science and technology are indispensable
  • Experience with high-level programming languages, preferably LabVIEW and Python (or similar), is mandatory
  • Knowledge and practical experience in the generation and characterization of entangled photonic states is advantageous
  • Experience as a supervisor and teaching assistant capable of supervising students is desirable.
  • You should be team-oriented, have good communication skills, organisational skills, scientific writing and presentation skills and the ability to work independently
  • German language skills are not a requirement, but a willingness to learn is desirable
