The Economic Geography and Globalization Research Working Group within the Institute of Geography in the Faculty of Geosciences at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a

Doctoral Research Associate (Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in, salary level E 13 TV-L, 65%)

at the earliest possible date. We are offering a fixed-term part-time position (65% FTE) for 3 years. Fulltime employees are required to teach 4 hours per week during the semester.

The research will be undertaken as part of the working group in Economic Geography and Globalization Research within the Institute of Geography. We are looking for a dynamic and inquisitive PhD researcher that will contribute to the research foci of the Economic Geography and Globalization Research Working Group. This group seeks to tackle – in a collaborative and integrative way – questions in economic geography and globalization research from a critical, inter/post-disciplinary, and decolonial perspective. We focus on the following topics: the renegotiation of natural resources; food security/food sovereignty; global financial flows; digital technologies; alternative futures specifically in rural areas; and have a larger interest in reimagining what the “economy” means and is. We address these topics with the objective to critically engage with the question how we, as global humanity, can sustain our future on this planet, and what kinds of new, old, diverse, and plural approaches we can tap into moving forward. We are looking for a team member that will actively and critically support the working group’s activities in research and teaching.

Your tasks:

  • Develop an independent PhD project within the framework of the working group’s research foci
  • Collect and analyze data for the project and present results to the academic community (conferences, publications, etc.)
  • Support and contribute to the working group’s broader research activities
  • Teach within the area of economic geography and globalization research as well as human geography more generally (at 65%, that is 2.6 hours per week during semester) and participate in the administration of exams and grading
  • Active participation in the activities and responsibilities of the mid-level faculty of the Institute of Geography

Our expectations:

  • A graduate degree (German Diplom or master’s degree) in the social sciences, preferably in the areas of human geography, socio-cultural anthropology, global/area studies or a related qualitative discipline is required.
  • Experience with social research methods, especially qualitative methods, is expected.
  • Strong research interests in the areas of critical economic geography and globalization research and an interest in rural areas with a focus on the Mediterranean would be welcome.
  • Interest in and a willingness to work in a diverse, inter/post-disciplinary, and collaborative team is essential.
  • Command of languages (excellent English; sufficient German for the teaching requirements and mid-level faculty responsibilities described above; additional languagesfor conducting fieldwork as appropriate to the research project).

We welcome applications from candidates with (academic or non academic) work experience in relevant areas.

The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunity and diversity. We welcome all applicants regardless of sex, nationality, ethnic or social background, religion or worldview, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are committed to creating family-friendly working conditions. Part-time options are generally available.

We actively encourage applications by women. Women with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered unless these are outweighed by reasons which necessitate the selection of another candidate.
